The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most consequential aircraft in American military history. Between 1942 and 1945, B-17 crews flew over 291,000 combat sorties over Nazi-occupied Europe, often at altitudes where temperatures dropped below -60°F, without pressurized cabins, in aircraft that enemy fighters and flak guns targeted relentlessly. The men who flew them knew the odds and flew anyway.
